About Us

Why Study Italian at IIS?

Istituto Italiano Scuola (IIS) is a San Francisco non-profit that promotes Italian language and culture throughout the Bay Area via special events, workshops and Italian language courses.

As the official language school affiliated to the Italian Cultural Institute in San Francisco, we offer the highest quality Italian language instruction and the broadest selection of courses in the Bay Area — nearly 30 classes ranging from elementary to advanced proficiency level each term.

We are committed to providing a stimulating and engaging environment in which to learn Italian, while simultaneously exposing students to the rich diversity of Italian culture and tradition. IIS instructors are all native Italian speakers and hold degrees from Italian universities.

With just 5-12 students per Italian language class, each course maximizes student-teacher interaction and personal attention. IIS attracts a diverse group of students, representing a wide variety of ages, ethnicities, and native countries. A remarkably high percentage of these students returns to IIS each term.

The Istituto Italiano Scuola does not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, gender or sexual orientation.

Istituto Italiano di Cultura (IIC) is the official branch of the Italian government dedicated to promoting Italian language and culture abroad. IIC and IIS share a building at 601 Van Ness Avenue, near the Opera House and the San Francisco Symphony.

IIS students enjoy half-price IIC membership with convenient access to many essential resources, such as the lending library of books and films at the Institute. IIC members are also invited to frequent art exhibitions, lectures, film screenings, concerts, and culinary events.

Through IIC, students can obtain Certification of Italian as a second language and can apply for a Scholarship to study in Italy.
