Set in a small town in the Po Valley, the story begins with the arrival of Mara, a young schoolteacher whose presence stirs curiosity and desire in the community. Through the eyes of Giovanni, an aspiring journalist, we witness the fragile balance between truth and prejudice as cultural differences, suspicion, and hidden passions collide, leading to a tragic chain of events.

Flavors of Sicily: wines, food & history

Experience Sicily at IIS with a guided tasting of wines, authentic dishes, and the fascinating history that shaped the island’s unique culinary traditions.

Additional information

Sicily’s cosmopolitan history is varied across its terrain — from grape varieties to your favorite dishes, they are all a culmination of thousands of years of various peoples and traditions.

In this class, under the expert guidance of Emilia, our partner from Cittavino, we will taste some of Sicily’s most ancient varieties, indigenous to the island, as well as a variety brought over from Northern Africa, though now considered quintessentially Sicilian. Most of the class will focus on western Sicily, as the ancient port town of Marsala served as the gateway for cultural influences from all over the Mediterranean and beyond!

A key topic will be the lasting influence of the Islamic reign and of the Moors from 827–1061, which we will not only discuss, but also taste in the wines and bites provided.

Join our teacher Mattia for a lively walking tour of North Beach, where Italian and English stories bring the neighborhood to life. You’ll admire the grandeur of Saints Peter and Paul Church, the intimate beauty of the Porziuncola Nuova, the historic stage of Casa Fugazi, and the literary spirit of City Lights Bookstore—along with hidden courtyards and surprises most locals don’t even know.

The walk ends at the historic San Francisco Italian Athletic Club (SFIAC), where your ticket includes a complimentary drink at the bar—an authentic taste of Italianità. And on October 4th, stay in Washington Square for Light Up the Tricolore: a flag raising, live music, and the lighting of North Beach in green, white, and red to kick off Italian Heritage Month.

Cine Club – LAMERICA by Gianni Amelio

Discover Italy through its cinema—not only a screening, but also a conversation: teacher Barbara guides a discussion that brings the movie, its cultural context, and Italy to life.

Join us for an Italian cinema evening at our next Cine Club meeting on Friday, October 24th!

We’ll be screening Lamerica (1994), a gripping Italian drama directed by Gianni Amelio. Set in post-communist Albania, the film follows Italian con artists Gino and Fiore, who arrive hoping to cash in on humanitarian grants. Their scheme unravels when they recruit Spiro, a confused elderly man, as a puppet CEO—only to have him flee. Gino’s desperate search for Spiro forces him to confront the harsh reality of Albanian poverty and the blurred divide between nationality, identity, and humanity.

A neorealist masterpiece, Lamerica strips its protagonist of all material identity—passport, clothes, status—making him one among the refugees he once exploited. Amelio’s use of real locations and non-professional actors gives the film a haunting authenticity that has earned it critical acclaim, including Best Director at Venice and Best Film at the European Film Awards.

Book Club “Se i gatti potessero parlare”

The book for this Book Club is “Se i gatti potessero parlare” by Piergiorgio Pulixi.

The story centers around Marzio Montecristo, owner of the bookstore Les Chats Noirs, who has been selected as the “floating bookstore” for an exclusive literary event. Famous crime writer Aristide Galeazzo, one of Italy’s most beloved and controversial authors, will write the final chapters of his new novel “Maestrale di sangue” aboard a cruise ship.

The Polpicella publishing house has organized a tour circumnavigating Sardinia, stopping at major ports. At each stop, readers board the ship to attend presentations under the stars and leave with signed copies. The event deliberately evokes “Murder on the Nile,” which the publisher’s marketing team plays up. Marzio isn’t enthusiastic—he detests Aristide Galeazzo—but his bookstore is struggling financially, making this an opportunity he can’t refuse.

The bookseller embarks on this journey accompanied by Inspector Caruso, a prospective member of the “Tuesday Investigators” book club, and his two feline mascots, Miss Marple and Poirot. While Marzio expects a relatively pleasant vacation, the trip takes an unexpected turn when a murder disrupts the cruise’s idyllic atmosphere. No one can leave the ship, suspicions mount, and tension becomes palpable. It falls to Montecristo to draw upon years of reading detective fiction to confront a brilliant-minded killer who believes they’ve committed the perfect crime.

Piergiorgio Pulixi crafts an irresistible mystery filled with suspense and wit that pays homage to classic mystery novels while transforming readers into true protagonists of this criminal cruise.

Under the guidance of our teacher Barbara, participants will enjoy reading and discussing these charming tales, while enriching their Italian vocabulary and deepening their understanding of literary language and cultural nuances.
