"SFIIS runs a fantastic org and program - truly a gem of a school. The staff are warm and wonderfully efficient. I've done both in-person and online classes, and plan to continue for as long as I can. They cover all levels of Italian proficiency, with an engaging mix of private lessons, themed classes (e.g. Italian for Travelers), and regular Term classes. If you can, I highly recommend going in person for at least some lessons - they have a wonderful office in sunny North Beach."

[...] As a family that values multilingualism, I can confidently say that this virtual program stands head and shoulders above the rest. Book Club “Delitto di benvenuto”

Do you enjoy reading books? Join our book club!

Additional information

Join us for an engaging Italian Book Club discussion on the book Delitto di benvenuto” by Cristina Cassar Scalia.

Set in Sicily during the 1960s, the novel follows Scipione Macchiavelli, a young police commissioner unexpectedly transferred from the glamorous atmosphere of Rome’s “Via Veneto” to the quiet town of Noto.

Far from the world of the dolce vita, Scipione is immediately drawn into a complex investigation involving the mysterious disappearance of a prominent local figure. As he navigates the unfamiliar culture and dynamics of southern Italy, he relies on his new team — and the intuition of the charming pharmacist Giulia Marineo — to uncover the truth.

Rich in atmosphere, history, and Sicilian culture, Delitto di benvenuto blends mystery, wit, and compelling characters into a fascinating detective story.

Under the guidance of our Barbara, participants will enjoy a lively discussion of the novel’s themes, characters, language, and cultural context in a welcoming and conversational setting.

Whether you are passionate about Italian literature, crime fiction, or simply looking for an opportunity to practice Italian through reading, this book club is a wonderful way to connect with fellow readers and immerse yourself in contemporary Italian storytelling.

We look forward to sharing an evening of great conversation and literary discovery with you!

We recommend registering early to ensure you have enough time to complete the reading.

Amara Lakhous: “The fertility of evil” book presentation

Join us for a special evening! We will meet the author Amara Lakhous and discuss the contents of his latest book

Additional information

An evening with Amara Lakhous, in conversation with Mariagrazia De Luca, for the presentation of his new book “The Fertility of Evil“.

ABOUT THE BOOK

A criminal investigation plumbs the seedy underbelly of Oran in this heady psychological thriller spanning the history of postcolonial Algeria.

Oran, July 5, 2018. Independence Day. Colonel Soltani of the Anti-Terrorism Unit reluctantly gives up his holiday after his superior officer tracks him down at his girlfriend’s home. A former National Liberation Front fighter and Algerian power broker has been found dead, his throat slit and face mutilated. Pressured to close this high-profile case quickly, Soltani and his team delve into the victim’s past from the 1950s, uncovering the secrets of a revolutionary cell whose three remaining members have become prime suspects.

Set in a post-independence era marred by corruption, this dark, captivating novel unfolds in contrasting landscapes of dilapidated historic quarters and opulent new districts, revealing Algeria’s struggle against deceit and betrayal.

Amara Lakhous was born in Algeria in 1970 and lived in Italy for eighteen years before moving to the United States in 2014. A bilingual novelist in Arabic and Italian, he is the author of Clash of Civilizations Over an Elevator in Piazza Vittorio, a bestseller translated into ten languages and adapted into a film in 2010. He is currently a professor in the practice in the Department of Italian Studies at Yale University.

Mariagrazia De Luca is a PhD candidate in the Department of Italian Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. She is currently writing her dissertation on translingualism across Italian contexts, reflecting on how languages move across and beyond borders, while at the same time prompting us to reconsider and redefine the very notion of “border” and national identity. Her previous work includes a chapter in The Routledge Handbook of Literary Translingualism (2021), titled “Literary Translingualism in the Italian Context: Toward a New Debate on the Italian Language,” as well as an essay on the reception of Dante among Somali writers, “From Forced Readers to Freedom Writers: Responding to Dante in Postcolonial Somalia,” published in Dante Studies (2020). She holds degrees in Italian literature from Sapienza University of Rome and in English from the City College of New York.

Truly a gem of a school

"SFIIS runs a fantastic org and program - truly a gem of a school. The staff are warm and wonderfully efficient. I've done both in-person and online classes, and plan to continue for as long as I can. They cover all levels of Italian proficiency, with an engaging mix of private lessons, themed classes (e.g. Italian for Travelers), and regular Term classes. If you can, I highly recommend going in person for at least some lessons - they have a wonderful office in sunny North Beach."
Cannot recommend this online foreign language program for toddlers enough!

"First and foremost, let me sing praises for the incredible teacher, Francesca. She possesses a remarkable talent for not only teaching but captivating young minds. Her ability to blend learning and play seamlessly is nothing short of amazing. [...] What's truly heartwarming is witnessing my daughter's enthusiasm for her weekly class. [...] As a family that values multilingualism, I can confidently say that this virtual program stands head and shoulders above the rest. [...] I am beyond impressed and immensely grateful for the positive impact this program has had on our family. If you're seeking a top-tier virtual language learning experience for your little one, look no further. This program is truly amazing, and I wholeheartedly endorse it to any parent seeking to enrich their child's linguistic abilities.

"I just completed my first course with Istituto Italiano Scuola and was quite impressed. It was both rigorous and fun in balance, inspiring me to learn and take my Italian further than ever before. I'll be back for the next level course."

“What I like most about participating in a literature class with the Istituto is having classmates with whom to discuss our books. I like hearing their opinions and responding to them. Reading is a great pleasure of mine, but sharing a book makes reading an adventure. With a teacher guiding us we improve our language skills and become more self-confident expressing ourselves. I’m grateful for the opportunity!”
The best way to maintain and improve my language skills

“I have been taking classes at the SFIIS for years because, short of a long stay in Italy, it is the best way to maintain and improve my language skills. But more than that, I enjoy being with the other students and my instructor(s), many of whom are now good friends. In my class we read classic and contemporary Italian literature, and our instructor keeps us up to date on Italian culture and even politics. The experience on Zoom is almost as good as the in-person classes; Barbara is amazing in her use of the tools to run a lively, efficient, and fun class.”
I've made life-long friends through SFIIS classes

“The SFIIS school offers the best, well rounded Italian languages classes in the Bay Area. With native speakers as teachers, the classes provide a comprehensive, natural and fun way of learning. Everyone feels welcome, no matter the level. The teachers are encouraging, entertaining and enthusiastic about their language and culture. As a bonus, I've made life-long friends through SFIIS classes. Please join our Italian language learning community!”

Art, social class, and revolution in the Italian Left

Screening of Della Volontà, short film by our student Samine Joudat, followed by an interactive discussion.

Additional information

Join us for an experimental short-film screening of Della Volontà by our student Samine Joudat and a discussion about the relationship between aesthetic production and politics from an emancipatory perspective, facilitated by Mariagrazia De Luca, phd candidate at UC Berkeley.

“In the formation of leaders, one premise is fundamental: is it the intention that there should always be rulers and ruled, or is the objective to create the conditions in which this division is no longer necessary?” — Antonio Gramsci The Prison Notebooks

Film synopsis: An experimental short film that meditates on the nature of intelligence at war with the will and the capacity of the miraculous to transcend the limits of the material status quo. Relevant questions that Della Volontà hopes to raise are the following. What is the through-line between intelligence, the will, and art? What is the danger of “hope”? What is the relationship between aesthetic beauty and politics today?

The film abstractly chronicles the legacy of the Italian left, portrayed through the voices and images of historic figures: Antonio Gramsci, Pier Paolo Pasolini and Antonio Negri–culminating with a contemporary dockworkers strike that began in Genoa.

Original images are shot in rural Sardinia, including the hometown of Gramsci–Ghilarza–and at the Casa Museo Antonio Gramsci archives. Additional original images are shot in Milan and Rome. Archival audio and footage are inter-spliced to form an abstract, non-linear docu-collage. Original score is by sound artist Adnan Naqvi.

Additional information

Join us for an Italian cinema evening at our next Cine Club meeting on Friday, April 17th!
