Movie Night

a man and a woman standing in a room.
With our teacher Mattia Milone, we will discuss older and new films from the Italian Cinema.

Additional information

This event is part of a series of Zoom meetings that IIS offers to discuss the contents of older and new movies from the Italian filmography. It is also an opportunity to spend time together with other students and have a conversation in Italian with, perhaps, a glass of wine in hand.

Because a movie is like a good wine: with each new meeting it has a different flavor, it shows details that we had not noticed before, and it changes with the passing of the years and the experiences we have had.

All levels from Intermedio and up

On Friday, April 7th via Zoom we will talk about:

La Provinciale-The Wayward Wife (1953)

Director: Mario Soldati

Starring: Gina Lollobrigida, Gabriele Ferzetti, Franco Interlenghi, Alda Mangini

Synopsis: in this 1950s Italian dramedy, Gina Lollobrigida plays a much-put-upon small-town girl named Gemma. Her scandalous romance as a young girl pushes her into a marriage with a man she doesn’t love, until a phony aristocrat and blackmailer comes along…

Truly a gem of a school

"SFIIS runs a fantastic org and program - truly a gem of a school. The staff are warm and wonderfully efficient. I've done both in-person and online classes, and plan to continue for as long as I can. They cover all levels of Italian proficiency, with an engaging mix of private lessons, themed classes (e.g. Italian for Travelers), and regular Term classes. If you can, I highly recommend going in person for at least some lessons - they have a wonderful office in sunny North Beach."
Cannot recommend this online foreign language program for toddlers enough!

"First and foremost, let me sing praises for the incredible teacher, Francesca. She possesses a remarkable talent for not only teaching but captivating young minds. Her ability to blend learning and play seamlessly is nothing short of amazing. [...] What's truly heartwarming is witnessing my daughter's enthusiasm for her weekly class. [...] As a family that values multilingualism, I can confidently say that this virtual program stands head and shoulders above the rest. [...] I am beyond impressed and immensely grateful for the positive impact this program has had on our family. If you're seeking a top-tier virtual language learning experience for your little one, look no further. This program is truly amazing, and I wholeheartedly endorse it to any parent seeking to enrich their child's linguistic abilities.

“What I like most about participating in a literature class with the Istituto is having classmates with whom to discuss our books. I like hearing their opinions and responding to them. Reading is a great pleasure of mine, but sharing a book makes reading an adventure. With a teacher guiding us we improve our language skills and become more self-confident expressing ourselves. I’m grateful for the opportunity!”
The best way to maintain and improve my language skills

“I have been taking classes at the SFIIS for years because, short of a long stay in Italy, it is the best way to maintain and improve my language skills. But more than that, I enjoy being with the other students and my instructor(s), many of whom are now good friends. In my class we read classic and contemporary Italian literature, and our instructor keeps us up to date on Italian culture and even politics. The experience on Zoom is almost as good as the in-person classes; Barbara is amazing in her use of the tools to run a lively, efficient, and fun class.”
I've made life-long friends through SFIIS classes

“The SFIIS school offers the best, well rounded Italian languages classes in the Bay Area. With native speakers as teachers, the classes provide a comprehensive, natural and fun way of learning. Everyone feels welcome, no matter the level. The teachers are encouraging, entertaining and enthusiastic about their language and culture. As a bonus, I've made life-long friends through SFIIS classes. Please join our Italian language learning community!”

Wine Tasting

a close up of a person holding a wine glass.
A premier wine selection dedicated to Southern Italian Volcanic Wines, accompanied by a discussion of the vocabulary for tasting and talking about wines in Italian.

Additional information

A memorable Wine Tasting event at the historic building of the Italian Community Services, Casa Fugazi, in the heart of North Beach.

Ticket holders will enjoy a premier wine selection dedicated to “Vini vulcanici dell’Italia del Sud” (Southern Italian Volcanic Wines) in an evening filled with Italian traditions, food, and friends. Italian wine importer and IIS student Mark Middlebrook will lead the seminar.

The heart of the class is a discussion of the most important vocabulary for tasting and talking about wines in Italian, with delicious examples in our glasses.

Our selection of wines

  • 2020 I Custodi ‘Aedes’ Etna Bianco
  • 2018 I Custodi ‘Pistus’ Etna Rosso
  • 2021 Caravaglio ‘Infatata’ Salina IGT Malvasia delle Lipari Secco
  • 2018 Matrone Bianco Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio
  • 2019 Matrone Rosso Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio
  • 2016 Cantina Madonna delle Grazie Aglianico del Vulture “Liscone”
  • 2019 Luigi Tecce ‘Satyricon’ Irpinia Campi Taurasini

You will also have some artisan cheese and other small bites to enjoy with these Italian-class wines:

  • Central Moliterno: this classic Sheep’s milk cheese from Sardinia is produced by the Master Cheese Makers from the Villecco Family. The cheese is aged in straw baskets (“Incanestro” style), resulting in a lovely textured rind.
  • “Lingue di Suocera” Mario Fongo Rosemary Flatbread Crackers: “Il panaté”, is how people in Piedmont call their village baker, and Mario Fongo still likes to identify his firm with this term. His breadsticks and flatbread crackers are true artisan products made in the heart of Italy.
  • Masseria Mirogallo Sundried Tomatoes: the flavor of the Masseria Mirogallo Sundried Tomatoes is incredible. Perfectly made, still bright red in color, and with a supple meaty texture that will surprise anyone. Marinated in high-quality extra virgin olive oil.

A discussion with our teacher Mattia Milone about the meaning of the album by the famous Italian songwriter Fabrizio de André, "Non al denaro non all'amore né al cielo" (1971)

Additional information

We will listen to the album by Fabrizio de André, “Non al denaro non all’amore né al cielo” (1971).

In 1915, the American poet Edgar Lee Masters published Spoon River Anthology, a collection of epitaphs written in verse, which narrate the lives of the deceased residents of an imaginary Middle-American village. In 1943, a young Italian student, Fernanda Pivano –soon to introduce Italian readers to postwar American literature– fell in love with this work. She translated and published it, defying fascist censorship. In 1970, the songwriter Fabrizio De André started composing songs inspired by this beautiful work, and in 1971 the album Non al denaro non all’amore né al cielo was released. Because of the wonderful lyrics and the beautiful melodies, it soon became a milestone in Italian musical production.

Registered students need to follow the link below to listen to the album and they will get a pdf to read the lyrics of each song prior to the meeting.

Truly a gem of a school
Erin Yu

"I just completed my first course with Istituto Italiano Scuola and was quite impressed. It was both rigorous and fun in balance, inspiring me to learn and take my Italian further than ever before. I'll be back for the next level course."

Dennis Abbe
