Book Club “Se i gatti potessero parlare”

The book for this Book Club is “Se i gatti potessero parlare” by Piergiorgio Pulixi.

The story centers around Marzio Montecristo, owner of the bookstore Les Chats Noirs, who has been selected as the “floating bookstore” for an exclusive literary event. Famous crime writer Aristide Galeazzo, one of Italy’s most beloved and controversial authors, will write the final chapters of his new novel “Maestrale di sangue” aboard a cruise ship.

The Polpicella publishing house has organized a tour circumnavigating Sardinia, stopping at major ports. At each stop, readers board the ship to attend presentations under the stars and leave with signed copies. The event deliberately evokes “Murder on the Nile,” which the publisher’s marketing team plays up. Marzio isn’t enthusiastic—he detests Aristide Galeazzo—but his bookstore is struggling financially, making this an opportunity he can’t refuse.

The bookseller embarks on this journey accompanied by Inspector Caruso, a prospective member of the “Tuesday Investigators” book club, and his two feline mascots, Miss Marple and Poirot. While Marzio expects a relatively pleasant vacation, the trip takes an unexpected turn when a murder disrupts the cruise’s idyllic atmosphere. No one can leave the ship, suspicions mount, and tension becomes palpable. It falls to Montecristo to draw upon years of reading detective fiction to confront a brilliant-minded killer who believes they’ve committed the perfect crime.

Piergiorgio Pulixi crafts an irresistible mystery filled with suspense and wit that pays homage to classic mystery novels while transforming readers into true protagonists of this criminal cruise.

Under the guidance of our teacher Barbara, participants will enjoy reading and discussing these charming tales, while enriching their Italian vocabulary and deepening their understanding of literary language and cultural nuances.

This satirical Renaissance comedy, set in Florence, explores themes of deception, desire, and social hypocrisy through a witty and irreverent plot involving love, manipulation, and clever schemes. Far from the political tone of The Prince, La Mandragola reveals another side of Machiavelli—one that is sharp, humorous, and deeply critical of societal norms.

Under the guidance of our teacher Mattia, students will explore the life of the author, the historical and cultural background of the work, and engage in lively discussions that bring its timeless themes to life.

About the Film
The story follows Rosalba, a neglected housewife from a small town, who is accidentally left behind at a highway rest stop during a family vacation. Seizing the opportunity for change, she embarks on a spontaneous journey to Venice, where she begins a new life as a waitress. In this enchanting city, Rosalba rediscovers her independence and self-worth, meeting a cast of colorful characters along the way, including a charming flower seller and a mysterious private detective.

Antonia’s life is shattered when her husband, Massimo, dies in a car accident. While going through his belongings, she discovers that he had been living a secret life. Our teacher, Barbara, will lead a conversation on the story of “IL GRANDE SOGNO”, (2009) directed by Michele Placido, offering participants a deeper understanding of the film.

Whether you’re a seasoned cinephile or simply looking to enjoy a fantastic movie night, our Cine Club promises an engaging and immersive experience. Don’t miss the opportunity to immerse yourself in the magic of Italian cinema and connect with fellow students and film enthusiasts.

“Il grande sogno,” is a compelling film that captures the turbulent spirit of Italy in the late 1960s. Set against the backdrop of political upheaval and social change, the film tells the story of Nicola, a young man from the South of Italy, who moves to Rome with dreams of attending the Academy of Dramatic Arts. To support himself, Nicola joins the police force and is assigned to work undercover, infiltrating a university. His encounters with Laura, a Catholic girl from the upper middle class who dreams of a better world, and Libero, a working student who dreams of revolution, will influence and forever change the course of his life.
