Istituto Italiano Scuola, together with the Alliance Française de San Francisco and the Goethe Institute, will host an exclusive celebration of Europe Day.
An evening to explore and rejoice in Europe’s rich cultural tapestry, combining elements of language, cinema, and cuisine.

When: May 9th at 6:00 PM
Where: Alliance Française de San Francisco, 1345 Bush Street, San Francisco, CA 94109
6:00 PM: Doors open.
6:30 PM: Short films screening: France (11min), Germany (23min), and Italy (11min) in the theatre (English subtitles)
8:00 PM: Doors close.

About Leonardo Candidi:

Leonardo Candidi, originally from a small town near Rome, Italy, has been engaged with photography throughout his life. His professional pursuit in the field began during his time at the University of Rome, where he studied Photography and Design. Leonardo has experience in various photography genres, including weddings and events, with a specialization in studio and commercial work. His primary interest, however, is street photography, capturing the essence of the places he’s lived – from Rome to his current home, San Francisco.

With our teacher Mattia, we will discuss, in Italian, lyrics by Luigi Tenco, il poeta del “se”

Luigi Tenco was a singer, a writer, and a poet. His songs expressed a strong desire for the impossible, a search for what could never be. His songs described the quest for unreachable states, places,and feelings. His mellow voice sang words like “se”, and “lontano” that carried the listeners away with them. Through nine songs, we will look into Tenco’s character, evolution, and career, until his tragic death at 29 years of age.

Whether you’re a seasoned cinephile or simply looking to enjoy a fantastic movie night, our Cine Club promises an engaging and immersive experience. ” L’ISOLA DELLE ROSE ” (2021) directed by Sydney Sibilia, based on a true story. In 1968, engineer Giorgio Rosa built an artificial island off the coast of Italy and declared it an independent state. The project attracted the interest of Italian and international authorities, who saw in its creation a threat to the established political order. The film blends elements of comedy, adventure, and drama to tell the story of the dream of creating an ideal place to live without laws and restrictions, offering a reflection on the tensions between utopia and reality.

The film will be screened in Italian with English subtitles. Suitable for all levels of language proficiency.

Screening of “TALIEN”

First cultural event in San Francisco by AMA Unibo Alumni Association SF Bay Area with Istituto Italiano Scuola

An exclusive event, with the director Elia Mouatamid as special guest, who will present his film TALIEN.

Talien is a road movie that tells the story of Aldo and Elia. Aldo is 60 years old, Moroccan, actually named Abdelouahaba, who has been living in Italy for thirty-six years; Elia is his son, 34 years old, and he has been living in Italy for over 33 years. The son accompanies his father on the journey back to their homeland: Morocco. A road movie where memories and stories lead us to a delicate reflection on the themes of family, cultural identity, immigration, and the changing mentality of Europe.

The director Mouatamid will be introduced by Luca Capponi, an Italo-Ecuadorian director who now lives in the Bay Area and attended the University of Bologna.

The event is free of charge, but please note that space is limited, so register soon.

 

Elia Mouatamid Biography

Elia Mouatamid was born in Fes, Morocco, on December 25, 1982. His father, Abdelouahab, was one of the early pioneers of migration to Italy in the early 1980s, leaving his homeland for Rovato, in the province of Brescia. Mouatamid grew up in the Padanian context, in an Italian setting vastly different from today’s, where foreigners were more of a curiosity than a problem.

In 2001, he graduated as a mechanical technician, and his professional career began with a job as a quality manager in a metalworking company in the Brescia area. From his father, he inherited many passions, especially for mechanics and photography, which led him to develop an interest in moving images and, subsequently, in the language of cinema.

In 2006, he participated in a local festival with an amateur short film titled “KLANdestino,” addressing intercultural themes, a central theme in his subsequent works.

Passionate about theater and to better understand the actor’s dimension, Mouatamid enrolled in the Voice Academy of Brescia and completed his three-year training in 2011. Since then, he has participated in various shows as an actor while continuing to direct his cinematic projects. His short film “GAIWAN” (2015) has been featured in over 70 festivals, winning more than 25 awards. His first feature-length documentary won the Special Jury Prize at the Turin Film Festival.
